Climate Controlled Storage

I had a great experience this morning at Midgard Storage thanks to Dan. He made the whole process of renting a new unit quick and easy. Dan was extremely polite, professional, and took the time to answer all of our questions without rushing us. It’s clear he cares about customer service and making sure everything is handled properly. Highly recommend working with him if you need storage!

Had gone to my unit and saw Roslyn doing a excellent job in wiping down the doors of the individual units. Very friendly and polite. When I opened my unit the light had burnt out. She immediately stopped her cleaning and went to get a ladder and new bulb and corrected the situation. Definitely has a strong work ethic.

Leslie Ann was very friendly and easy to work with. Having a live, virtual assistant was very helpful in walking us through the rental process.

The reservation process for a climate controlled storage unit was easily completed by phone. The process to complete the application was done “virtually” on site with the final steps assisted by a person remotely. The unit that I am renting is clean and the climate is well controlled. I recommend Midgard highly. M.L Martin

The process was extremely straightforward. I was able to register online and identify the type of storage I needed. The gate code was sent in advance and it opened with no issue. My Davinci lock code was emailed and texted the night before and it worked with no issue. The facility is super clean. My only suggestion is to provide a small bridge or ramp for the threshold entering the building. I think there is a small channel in the foundation to prevent water from getting into the units. The channel made it a little more difficult to use the cart and dolly as the wheels for both would catch on the lip. The unit door and latch worked perfectly. I’m glad I selected this Midgard location. The assistants were quick to text and respond via phone to answer my questions. I rented a second unit. Worked out perfectly. Both times nave been seamless.

*adding to my previous review... I decided to keep my unit for a bit longer. For some reason (my phone is a dinosaur) I couldn't get to the payment area so I called for help 2 minutes before my husband came home and needed my car! Needless to say, I was multi-tasking the whole beginning of the call and David stayed amazing and worked out the issue in record time. I appreciate so much the patience and kindness that so far I have experienced from everyone here! Thank you! Very polite, patient and helpful "virtual" staff! For no human in the flesh, it was very clean in the office, and it appears that everything might be like being on a zoom call now. Idk why I didn't ask if this was the way it would be every time now, but they were able to accomplish everything like this. It was so new to me that I'm not really sure how I feel about it but 5 stars for the person I got to meet and work with behind the screen and the efficiency of the entire transaction. It worked! *I'm guessing this is what my grandma would have felt like 🤣

They were quick to respond to questions and the biggest thing is they have all information on their website. They so respond to text messages because talking on the phone isn't always easy at the time. The prices were also cheaper than other near by storage facilities. Their customer service, especially the virtual help, is fantastic! Would definitely recommend

What is Climate Controlled Self Storage?

When it comes to protecting your belongings, not all storage options are created equal. Some items require more than just space to sit, they need a stable, regulated environment to prevent damage caused by heat, cold, humidity or dry air.

That's where climate controlled self-storage comes in. At its core, climate-controlled storage is a type of storage unit designed to maintain consistent temperature and humidity levels year-round. These specialized storage units are typically housed inside insulated buildings with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

The goal is to shield your valuables from extreme temperature swings and excess moisture, which can cause warping, cracking, rusting, and other damage. Let's take a closer look at what climate-controlled storage units offer, what items they protect best, and why you might need one.

How Does Climate Controlled Storage Work?

Unlike standard storage units, which are often exposed to outdoor temperatures and weather conditions, climate control storage units are located inside enclosed buildings. These spaces are equipped with systems that regulate the internal environment, usually keeping temperatures between 55°F and 80°F.

Many also maintain optimal humidity levels to prevent excess moisture in the air. This level of protection is especially valuable in areas that experience extreme seasonal shifts or consistently humid climates. Whether it's the height of summer or the middle of winter, a climate-controlled storage unit keeps your items in a safe, stable environment.

What Can You Store in Climate Controlled Units?

Climate Controlled Protective Capabilities

Protected Items The Risk Climate-Controlled Benefit
Furniture & Wood Warping, Cracking, & Mold Maintains consistent humidity levels to prevent wood from expanding or contracting.
Electronics & Media Corrosion & Data Loss Prevents internal condensation that can ruin circuit boards and delicate internal components.
Clothing & Fabrics Mildew & Odors Circulates air and regulates temperature to keep textiles fresh and free of moisture damage.

While you can technically store almost anything in climate-controlled storage, certain items benefit from this type of environment far more than others. If you're storing anything sensitive to heat, cold, or humidity, a climate controlled self-storage unit is highly recommended.

Common items that need climate control:

  • Wooden furniture: Protects against cracking, splitting, or warping caused by humidity and temperature changes.
  • Electronics: Prevents damage from moisture buildup and heat.
  • Artwork: Preserves paintings, photographs, and collectibles from warping, fading, and mold.
  • Important documents: Keeps paper crisp, legible, and free from mildew.
  • Musical instruments: Shields against cracking wood, rusted metal parts, and stretched strings.
  • Leather goods: Prevents cracking, mildew, and discoloration.
  • Household appliances: Maintains electrical components in optimal condition.
  • Antiques and collectibles: Preserves value by protecting against environmental damage.
  • Wine collections: Maintains consistent temperature and humidity, ideal for long-term storage.

Why Choose Climate Controlled Storage?

Climate Control is Essential in the Southeast
In the high-humidity corridors of states like Alabama, Arkansas, and North Carolina, relative humidity can often exceed 70%. Without humidity regulation, items like wooden furniture and electronics are at risk of mold and internal corrosion. Midgard's climate-controlled units manage both temperature and relative humidity, providing the environment your valuables deserve in the unique southern climate.

Protection from Temperature Extremes
In many parts of the country, temperatures can fluctuate wildly between seasons. In the height of summer, non-climate controlled units can reach well over 100°F, while winters can plunge below freezing. These extremes can wreak havoc on temperature-sensitive items. Climate-controlled storage units keep conditions steady, regardless of what's happening outside.

Humidity Control
Moisture in the air is a leading cause of mold, mildew, rust, and corrosion. Climate control storage facilities often include humidity management as part of their system, keeping relative humidity within a safe range. This is crucial for items like paper, fabrics, electronics, and wood.

Cleaner, Enclosed Environment
Because climate-controlled storage units are typically located inside buildings, they tend to stay cleaner than outdoor units. There's less dust, dirt, and debris, plus added protection from pests like insects and rodents.

Peace of Mind
Knowing your valuables are stored in a regulated, secure, and monitored environment provides added reassurance, especially for long-term storage. Whether you're preserving a family heirloom, storing business inventory, or safeguarding seasonal gear, climate controlled self-storage gives you confidence your belongings are protected.

Is Climate Controlled Storage Worth It?

While climate-controlled storage units generally cost a bit more than traditional storage, many customers find the added protection well worth the investment. If you're storing items of sentimental or financial value, or anything that could be damaged by temperature fluctuations or humidity, the small additional monthly cost can save you from costly repairs or irreversible damage down the road.

Ask yourself:

  • Are my belongings sensitive to heat, cold, or moisture?
  • Will I be storing these items for an extended period?
  • Am I storing irreplaceable items like family keepsakes, antiques, or legal documents?
  • Is the climate in my area especially humid, hot, or cold?

If you answered yes to any of these, climate-controlled storage near you is likely the ideal solution.
